“We understand that police militarization is a pervasive issue in our community; However, that did not happen in this incident,” Chancellor Elwood Robinson wrote in a letter to the campus community.

Students Arrested in Class

A black student is handcuffed and arrested after arguing with a professor over an essay in class at a black college. Footage shows 20-year-old Leilla Hamoud, who was arrested at Winston-Salem State University after a fight with her teacher Cynthia Villagomez.

Hamoud sobbed and complained that the police officers hurt her when they forced her arms behind her back because she allegedly had an argument about her last article. He faces disorderly conduct charges and is expected to appear in court again on Jan. 25, according to WXII reporter Louie Tran.

But many of the four million people who saw the video are wondering if it was necessary for black college workers in North Carolina to call law enforcement, and some say it was racially motivated.

The viral TikTok begins with two officers, one white and one black, forcing Hamoud to sit at a desk while they handcuff her from behind. The sobbing 20-year-old was heard telling police, “You’re hurting me a lot,” as her teacher denied calling local police about the student.

“I was trying to calm down,” said Villagómez, co-chair of the school’s Department of Political Science, History, and Social Justice. But Hamoud said to the teacher: “I hate you. I swear to god I hate you, I swear to god I hate you, you’re the worst teacher in the world.

“Are you handcuffing me because I don’t apologize?” You tried to embarrass me about my article. You are a lousy teacher.

“She sits here and says she likes black people and all that,” Hamoud continued through tears. “You yelled at me first.” This sentiment is then echoed by the class, who appear to be trying to defend Hamoud as he walked out of class. Despite this, Villagómez was heard saying, “I tried to apologize.”

It’s still unclear what led to the arrest, but university spokeswoman Haley Gingles insisted the arrest was the last resort and came at least 10 minutes after the argument began. “It was a lot of time from the start of the initial break to the start of the music video,” he told NBC News.

“Sure, it was more than 10 minutes.” He also said Villagomez didn’t call 911 for Hamoud but instead called 911 from another nearby teacher who overheard the argument.

Statement Of The University Spokesman

Haley Gingles, WSSU director of marketing and communications, gave WXII 12 News more details. Gingles told the TV network that a “dispute” arose between the student and the teacher at 8:30 a.m. regarding a final exam.

According to Gingles, the police were called by another university employee who overheard the disagreement. It wasn’t Villagómez who called the campus police. She told reporter Louis Tran, “Once campus police are on the scene, their first and foremost role, under our university policy and public safety and policing policy, is to ensure everyone involved in the incident is safe. They did.”

Gingles added: “They wanted to assess the situation, see what’s going on, and then come up with a positive solution if necessary, and if not they are bound by their policies to initiate the necessary procedures. They called to arrest the student and do escort her off campus.”

The university is still investigating the incident; he said to Tran. Gingles told CNN that any disciplinary action taken against the student “will be reconsidered going forward.”

She said of the teacher, “She is very upset and shocked by everything. There have been various threats to your security, which of course are alarming.”
