What Were The Details Of An Incident?
Police said they were called to an area around Bentley and St James after about 10 people reported a group had caused “riots in different directions”. At the scene, officers, including those from the canine department, found an adult male and three minors.
One of them was 13-year-old Jayden Abraham, who suffered serious injuries to his face, neck, and arm when a police dog was used. The teenager was taken straight to Perth Children’s Hospital, where he remains.
What Was His Family’s Statement?
Jayden’s family is outraged and her aunt Shara Abraham has been by her bedside since the attack. “We don’t like to see him like that, it hurts because he’s our baby and too young to go through something so painful and traumatic,” she said through tears.
“He just turned 13; he has a great head start in life for himself. We just want answers now.”
Ms. Abraham said the family wanted to see body camera footage of the incident to find out what happened. The family wants to know if Jayden was already handcuffed and tied up when the dog attacked, which was questioned by Deputy Police Commissioner Kylie Whiteley.
“The body camera does not support that claim,” he said this morning.
Police Investigation Report
WA Police took the rare step of showing media, including ABC, a 30-second clip of the bodycam view. It shows the handler walking down a dark street. “Police dog, down,” the officer yells.
He is immediately followed by the officer who says: “I will release the dog; you could hurt yourself.”
As soon as the dog seems to have been released, the officer falls to the ground. As he regains his feet, his camera captures the dog, apparently locked with the jaws closed on Jayden’s arm by the side of the road, as the handler reaches out to free him. While another vision was recorded, the footage shown to the media is cut at this point.
Police say Jayden was freed from the dog’s jaws and other officers arrived before paramedics could treat him. The vision does not appear to show Jayden in handcuffs and it is unclear if he ran from the police.
