Govt Decided To Provide Essential Food Commodities At Reasonable Prices: Finance Minister

The Federal Minister of Finance and Revenue, Mr. Shaukat Tarin, held a meeting with the Prime Minister’s Special Assistant for Food Security, Jamshed Iqbal Cheema, at the Finance Department. During the meeting, the general situation regarding the availability of essential foods was discussed.

In his comments, the Minister of Finance reiterated the government’s firm commitment to provide essential food at affordable prices to consumers across the country.

He also emphasized the importance of building strategic reserves for key raw materials, namely wheat, sugar, legumes, ghee, tomatoes, onions, and potatoes, in order to eliminate profit margins, undue levies, and stabilize the prices of raw materials everyday items.

Also discussed was the “Agricultural Transformation Plan”, which is being introduced to take conventional agriculture to the next level, that is, commercial agriculture with the aim of increasing the agricultural productivity of the country.

SAPM highlighted that the Agricultural Transformation Plan will boost agribusiness, attract private sector investment, reduce post-harvest losses, increase the value of local agricultural products, develop rural infrastructure, and improve farmers’ access to microcredit.

The Minister of Finance highlighted the need to involve all relevant stakeholders in the successful implementation of the proposed Agricultural Transformation Plan. He from time to time he also gave his full support and restraint.

The Finance Minister also wanted to use SAPM’s expertise in food safety to regularly and effectively control the prices of essential foods in order to provide the best possible relief to the general public.
