The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved a significant increase of Rs. 7.05 in the fuel cost adjustment (FCA) for electricity bills in March 2024, following pressure from the caretaker government.

This adjustment will affect consumers of ex-WAPDA distribution companies (DISCOs) for electricity consumed in January 2024, adding an extra burden of Rs. 55 billion to consumers.

Initially, DISCOs requested an FCA adjustment of Rs. 7.13 per unit, but NEPRA had postponed a decision pending an investigation.

However, under pressure from the caretaker government and without completing the investigation or risking IMF benchmarks, NEPRA proceeded with the surcharge, postponing the probe until after Ramazan but announcing the FCA revision late on Monday.

The Rs. 7.05/kWh adjustment will apply to all consumer categories except Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (EVCS) and Lifeline consumers, and it will be itemized separately on consumers’ bills based on units consumed in January 2024.

This adjustment represents the highest FCA rate ever imposed, marking a 96 percent increase over the pre-fixed fuel cost included in January bills.

This decision adds to the already high power bills, which have seen roughly a 26 percent rise in the annual base tariff and significant quarterly tariff adjustments.
