Dubai Becomes The Largest Adopter Of EVs in The Middle East

The green charging initiative in Dubai had a significant impact on the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

350 green chargers will be installed by 2022. According to Gulf News, the UAE has significantly accelerated the development of electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Dubai currently has 620 charging stations, although privatized electric vehicle chargers are also included in this number.

In addition, according to a report by the official news agency WAM, Dubai produced 15,100 electric vehicles and 13,500 BEVs in 2022. This was highlighted during the 74th session of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy (DSCE). The council discussed plans to expand the network of electric vehicle charging stations in Dubai.

Environment-Friendly Taxis

The Highways and Transport Authority (RTA) board has approved a plan to convert all taxis in Dubai (Dubai taxi and private company taxis) to HEV, EV, and hydrogen cars by 2027. This plan is in line with the Green Economy of the Dubai Supreme Energy Council Program.

Mattar Al Tayer, RTA General Manager and Chairman of the Board, said:

The plan to convert taxis into eco-friendly vehicles reflects the guidelines of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, to optimize energy use and promote environmental sustainability in the UAE Emirates. RTA has taken decisive steps to create a safe, clean, and sustainable environment that lives up to Dubai’s reputation. This initiative supports the Dubai government’s efforts to introduce eco-friendly vehicles and promote a cleaner environment.

RTA has already converted 72% of Dubai’s taxi fleet or 8,221 vehicles to green vehicles. This achievement coincides with maximizing energy efficiency, promoting a sustainable environment, and Dubai’s rise as a frontrunner in promoting green mobility.
