Clare Childes, a mother of three, hanged herself just two hours after her GP told her he would “call her tomorrow” during a telephone survey to discuss her urgent mental health, according to a survey.
Childes reported during a 13-minute phone call to Dr. Gwilym Evans on March 31 of this year of suicidal thoughts and told him that she had swallowed a bottle of alcohol and that she was considering hanging herself later that night.
But she was not immediately referred to a mental health crisis team because she was afraid they would not see her for drinking.
The doctor first told her that she would call her the next day.
Ms. Childes was found dead in her home by her son’s friend just two hours after the phone call.

Ms. Childes’s death occurred just weeks before the NHS asked family doctors to return for her personal appointments.
Health Minister Sajid Javid is expected to present a package of measures in the coming days to lift the Covid rules that prevent family doctors from seeing patients face-to-face.
The latest figures suggest that less than 60% of family doctor appointments in England provide personal help, up from 80% before the pandemic.
Health officials have asked surgeries to make sure all patients can see their doctors in May, but some practices have subsequently ignored the order.
Activists emphasize that face-to-face dating is key to identifying symptoms and conditions that might otherwise be missed. There is also a concern that patients will ignore potentially difficult issues due to access issues.
During the investigation, Dr. Evans said that Ms. Childes told him that she had suicidal thoughts, that the confinement worsened.
But she delayed contact with the crisis team because she said she had “spilled a bottle of Disaronno to stop the pain.”

Investigation heard that Dr. Evans called again at 5:45 p.m. later that day, 31st March, but he answered the phone right away.
Dr. Evans said that he took a mental health class after Childes’ tragic death.
He added: “Now I’m going to make the benchmark.”
“At the time, I was concerned about Clare’s presentation, as she told me that she had been drinking heavily and I was concerned that if she was under the influence, they would not accept a layoff.”
He said he would “wait for the effect of the alcohol to wear off.”
The investigation found that Ms. Childes was left alone for only 40 minutes before her son’s friend found her body.
Her daughter, Kimberley Childes, said her mother said that she “couldn’t finish” before she died.
Kimberely said: “She had a history of poor mental health that worsened during the confinement.”
“Mom begged the doctor to do something, but they told her to wait until the next day.”
“I never thought she would do something like that.”
“She loved to go out and socialize and her family and friends will sadly miss her.”
Acting Coroner Katie Sutherland has recorded one death by hanging.
She said: “Clare had a history of mental health problems and during the telephone consultation that began at 1:56 pm she said that she was feeling suicidal.”
“They told her they would refer her to the mental health team, but they didn’t.”
A package from Health Minister Sajid Javid will be announced in the coming days to address the crisis in access to general practitioners.
One of the rules for staying on the pit is the two-meter rule for social distancing in operations. This was ruled out by hospitals last month.
Family physicians could also ease their workload as hospitals write more prescriptions and sick leave notes for workers. And the annoying cleaning effort could be reduced.
