Graphics cards used for cryptocurrency mining are only as good as new cards, YouTuber Linus Tech Tips (LTT) has shown in one of his latest videos.

In recent years, reports have indicated that graphics cards used for crypto mining are becoming overloaded and have a shortened lifespan. Many have warned against using GPUs for mining. However, LTT has refuted these claims by testing around 25 mining cards with new cards that have hardly been used.

The YouTuber anonymously acquired used crypto-mining graphics cards that were widely available last year. The test included multiple NVIDIA RTX 3060, 3070, and 3080 GPUs and Radeon RX 5700 XT graphics cards from an AMD partner.

Of all the cards tested, only two failed due to mining. Those two were the Gigabyte Eagle RTX 3060 OC and the Sapphire Pulse RX 5700 XT GPU, both of which were removed due to alarmingly high clock speeds and temperatures. The Eagle RTX 3060 also had poor VRAM performance.

The Sapphire RX 5700 XT failed the combustor test, but it performed admirably in gaming benchmark tests against other GPUs used.

However, all other graphics cards used performed well against LTT’s own GPUs, showing that buying mined cards is not a bad idea, but buyers should exercise caution. In fact, some even outperformed the RTX 3080 Founders Edition in gaming.
