UAE Residents Must Apply For A Re-entry Permit After 6 Months Abroad

The Federal Agency for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP) has introduced a new re-entry permit allowing UAE residency visa holders staying outside the country for more than 6 months to return.

A residency visa will be automatically canceled if someone stays outside the UAE for more than 180 consecutive days. A new service allows these individuals to apply for a return permit, allowing them to resume life in the United Arab Emirates using the same visa.

The cost of the re-entry permit varies depending on the time you have spent outside the country. The ICP fee is about AED150 ($40.83), with a fine of AED100 ($27.22) for 30 days or less spent outdoors. Travel agents may also charge additional fees.

A “reasonable reason” and “evidence of it” are the most important factors in obtaining a re-entry permit. Although the ICP has not defined “reasonable cause,” it can include medical as well as humanitarian or work-related cases.

Applicants must submit copies of their Emirates ID and passport and state the reason. The application must be made from outside the United Arab Emirates. Once approved, the applicant must enter the UAE within 30 days.

Certain categories are exempt from the re-entry permit, such as Golden visa holders, students enrolled in foreign educational institutions, investors, diplomats, spouses of expatriate Emiratis, and expatriates traveling abroad for medical treatment.
