What’s up with tech billionaires and unexpected divorce notices? Two years after Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and his ex-wife Mackenzie Scott announced their decision to split after 25 years of marriage, Microsoft billionaire founder and philanthropist Bill Gates and his long-time partner have also decided to split.
The couple used Twitter to post a joint statement confirming the split after 27 years of marriage.
Although they will continue to work together at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, they believe they can no longer “grow as a couple“.
Bill met Melinda at Microsoft in 1987, shortly after she joined the technology company. The couple married in 1994.
His foundation is one of the richest in the world, having provided more than $54 billion in areas such as malaria and infectious disease control, agricultural research, basic health care, and sanitation.
Of course, the news of their breakup on social networks caused a stir, as Internet users did not refrain from reacting and doing their part in this regard.
Some couldn’t resist asking Bill or Melinda now that the two extremely wealthy individuals are single and (presumably) willing to mingle:
