After more than a decade of silence, After Britney Spears pleaded for the end of her longstanding Conservatorship, the singer received support from Justin Timberlake, Mariah Carey, and other celebrities.
On Wednesday afternoon, at the last hearing in the Arrangement case, in which she has lived since early 2008.
The pop star spoke directly to Los Angeles Supreme Court Justice Brenda Penny for the first time and was passionate about her independence.
“I just want my life back,” Spears said, appearing in court from a distance. (Audience audio was streamed live online.) “It was 13 years ago and it was enough.”
The 39-year-old singer added: “There is no point in making a living for so many people and learning that I am not good enough, that I am great at what I do and that I allow these people to that they do control what I do, it doesn’t make any sense.”

Spears also stated that she “wants to share my story with the world rather than being a secret secret”.
Whereas her curators prevented her from seeing a doctor remove an IUD so she could care for another child; and that she wanted to “choose my own lawyer”, which she was not allowed to do.
“The main reason I’m here,” she said, “is because I want to end guardianship without assessment.”
Spears’ guardianship was established over 13 years ago after his high-profile split. The deal puts control of his personal life, career choices, and nearly $60 million net worth into the hands of his restaurateur – who was primarily his father, Jamie Spears. On Wednesday, a lawyer for Jamie Spears said, “He is sorry to see his daughter suffer and suffer so much. Mr. Spears loves his daughter and he misses her very much.”
The ‘Toxic’ singer rarely spoke for herself in this case and expressed her wishes mainly through her lawyer Samuel D. Ingham III.
The message that has emerged most clearly from her few communications so far, however, is that she wants to significantly reduce her father’s role in the agreement: In November, Ingham reportedly told the judge that Spears was “afraid of his father”. ‘And’ won’t recur if her father is responsible for her career.
On Tuesday, the New York Times published a report with recently received confidential court documents revealing that the singer has been fighting her guardianship and position since 2014 – much longer when foreigners suspected.
When guardianship began in 2008, Jamie was appointed sole curator of Britney’s person and co-curator of her estate alongside attorney Andrew Wallet (who resigned in 2019 and was replaced by asset management company Bessemeresse at Britney’s request last year).
Jamie temporarily stepped down as the sole curator of Britney after a health episode in 2019 when Chartered Curator Jodi Montgomery took office.
Britney has made it clear in court records that she would prefer her father never to take him back, and her attorney filed for a permanent occupation of Montgomery earlier this year.

Following the February release of Framing Britney Spears, the latest installment in FX’s independent documentary series The New York Times Presents, the pop star’s case came under scrutiny and the #FreeBritney movement, first organized by fans in 2019, took in Public Gaining Momentum Outrage over Spears’ mistreatment (not limited to the trusteeship, but throughout his more than two-decades-long career) escalated.
There has been no time since 2008 when the case and movement against Britney Spears’ conservatorship have been continuously heeded.
But as the star told us, “All I need is time – a moment from me.” Your time has come and it has taken hold.
