The Iranian Footballer Sentenced To Death
Widespread anti-government protests erupted in Iran following the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman arrested in September for allegedly not following the country’s dress code.
Iran is facing a nationwide backlash after police reportedly arrested Amini for breaking strict helmet-wearing rules.
According to IranWire, Nasr-Azadani and two other defendants appeared on state television on November 20 as they read a “forced” confession.
The report adds that Nasr-Azadani, who also played for Iranian teams Rah-Ahan and Gol-e Rayhan, was present during the protests.

IranWire claims that the Islamic Republic of Iran’s judicial system plans to hang the 26-year-old footballer for the deaths of Colonel Esmaeil Cheraghi and two members of the Basij, the government militia, during protests on 17th November.
However, it is claimed that Nasr-Azadani was nowhere near where Cheraghi and the two Basij members were killed. Instead, Nasr-Azadani’s participation in the protests was reportedly limited to chanting slogans for a few hours.
It was also reported that Nasr-Azadani’s lawyer and family were ordered not to speak in the hope that this could result in a reduced sentence. At least 488 people have been killed and government authorities arrested 18,200 since the protests began in September, according to human rights organizations.
The FIFPRO Footballers Union is a global organization representing 65,000 professionals from 66 different countries worldwide. He made a statement after former Tractor defender Sazi Nasr-Azadani was reportedly at risk of execution after speaking out in support of women’s fundamental rights and freedoms.
“FIFPRO is shocked and disgusted by reports that professional footballer Amir Nasr-Azadani faces execution in Iran after campaigning for women’s rights and fundamental freedoms in his country,” the statement said.
“We express our solidarity with Amir and demand the immediate lifting of his sentence.”
Before the start of the World Cup, there were calls for Iran to be excluded from the tournament amid widespread reports that the Middle Eastern country was supplying arms to Russia.
Ukraine appealed to FIFA to have Iran suspend the competition in October, a request that was unsuccessful. It was called after England was urged to boycott their game against Iran over women’s rights. But it was the arms shipment that was specifically mentioned by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who claimed Iranian “kamikaze” drones had been used in Russian attacks on his country, as the British government prepared new sanctions against Iran.
Iran was allowed to take part in the World Cup, but the players began their protest by refusing to sing the national anthem before their first game against England on 21st November.
The players sang the national anthem at their next matches after it was claimed their families at home were at risk of imprisonment or torture. Despite beating Wales, Carlos Queiroz’s side was eliminated from the tournament in the group stage and finished third in Group B.
