Bollywood Industry Legend Dilip Kumar Dies at the Age of 98

As the sun rises on Wednesday morning, heartbreaking news comes from the Indian film industry as a pioneering actor and Bollywood Tragedy King Dilip Kumar die of age-related health problems a week after being admitted to the Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai. He was 98 years old.

An official statement was published on his social networks, in which the tragic news was released: “With a heavy heart and deep sadness, I announce the death of our beloved Dilip Saab a few minutes ago.”

Kumar leaves behind his wife Saira Banu, herself a Bollywood actress. The couple has no children.

Last week, Kumar was rushed to the hospital after complaining of shortness of breath, the second time he was hospitalized in the same month. A senior doctor at Hinduja Hospital said Dilip Kumar’s blood pressure and hemoglobin were dropping.

The doctor said that Kumar received a blood transfusion at the hospital and that it was quite difficult to get blood for him as his blood type was O negative.

He previously he was admitted to Hinduja Hospital on June 6 after a similar health problem. As per the hospital, Kumar was diagnosed with bilateral pleural effusion at the time, an accumulation of excess fluid between the layers of the pleura outside the lungs. After a successful pleural puncture, he was discharged after five days.

Dilip Kumar, whose real name is Yusuf Khan, has appeared in more than 65 films over five iconic decades.

He was considered the king of tragedy for his iconic roles in such films as “Devdas” (1955), “Naya Daur” (1957), “Mughal-e-Azam” (1960), “Ganga Jamuna” (1961), “Kranti” (1981) and “Karma” (1986). He debuted with Jwaar Bhata in 1944, but had his first box office success, Andaz, since 1949.

The film made Kumar famous, most recently in ‘Qila’ in 1998. He is also considered the first method actor in India.

He was the first actor to win the Filmfare Award for Best Actor in 1954, a total of 8 times. The actor received the Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Dada Saheb Phalke awards.

He also received Pakistan’s highest civilian honor, the Nishan-e-Imtiaz. Kumar is listed in Guinness World Records for winning the most awards of an Indian actor.
